Nutrition: The Secret to Real Weight Loss
Are you serious about losing some weight?
  • Have you tried every diet you can find, and you still struggle with weight loss?
  • Have you been able to keep off the weight you lost on your last diet?
  • Are you looking for the secret to losing weight?

Consider what you mean when you say you are serious about weight loss. This doesn't mean, "How strong is your desire to lose weight?" It means, "Are you willing to take your health seriously and commit to lifestyle changes for long-term health and weight management?" While you think about that, let me explain the difference between the "diet" and the "healthy lifestyle" strategies.

The Pros and Cons of the "Diet" Approach
Dieting in the normal sense means reducing the number of calories you consume versus the energy you expend in a fixed period of time. This approach focuses your "eyes on the prize" of a certain weight as your goal. Success is only achieved if you reach that magic number.

The Pros are:
  • rapid weight loss and
  • short-term calorie restriction.
The Cons are:
  • highly restrictive "meals",
  • reduced nutrition and energy,
  • health risks leading to disease,
  • slower metabolism,
  • water and lean muscle loss,
  • difficulties in maintaining regimen,
  • obsession with scale,
  • boredom,
  • deprivation, and
  • post-diet weight gain.
Essentially, fad diets can't work for the long term. How can you expect to stay on a highly restrictive diet? The answer is: You can't. How can you expect your body to keep its new svelte figure when you return to your way of eating? The answer is: You can't. Obviously, you can't win with the diet strategy. Your lifestyle got you into this mess, so your lifestyle is going to have to get you out of it.

The Pros and Cons of the "Healthy Lifestyle" Approach
The healthy lifestyle approach turns dieting on its head. It means you actually change your old "normal" behavior to new "normal" behavior. You slowly, but permanently, change your behavior to incorporate more plant-based foods and lean protein as well as increased activity.

You can judge your success based on how well you are doing with the overall process of changing your behavior. Did you increase your workout to three times this week? Did you eat an extra vegetable each day this week? Did you increase your water intake this week? Did you eat
5 "meals" a day to keep your metabolism going strong?

The Pros are:
  • long-term weight loss and management,
  • increased lean muscle,
  • increased metabolism,
  • overall health and energy,
  • minimal deprivation,
  • gradual adjustment,
  • easier to maintain and embrace,
  • friendlier process focus, and
  • greater immune system and protection against diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
The Cons are:
  • slow weight loss (1 to 2 pounds a week) and
  • the challenge of permanently changing your behavior.
So now let me ask again, "Are you serious about losing weight?" If you want to get off the vicious cycle of yo-yo diets, you need to really consider if you are ready to commit to slowly changing your behavior. The good news is it is a slow process, which is also the bad news. You won't see results as quickly as you would with a crash diet, but you will feel better and have more fun in the long run. And don't forget, it is okay and entirely human to slip up. Just get up the next day and keep going. It will all be worth it in the end. It is up to you to decide. 2009 can be the year you stopped the intense and debilitating struggle.
